Building Permits

Church Street East Historic District contains properties that have been designated as historically or architecturally significant on a local, state and national level.  Maintaining the architectural and historical integrity of the district is the responsability of the Mobile Historic Development Commission (MHDC).  All  additions, demolitions or new construction proposed within a Historic District must be first be approved by the MHDC's Architectural Review Board (ARB) to obtain a Certificate of Appropriateness. You must have this COA before you may purchase the required permits from the City of Mobile. Ordinary in-kind repairs, roofing and painting may recieve staff approval without being placed on the ARB agenda.

Church Street East Historic District is part of the Downtown Development District (DDD).  The complete zoning code for all properties within the Downtown Development District is contained in the DDD zoning code (DDD code). Historically acurate exterior paints colors are used to maintain the intergrety of the district and all exterior painting requires a permit from MHDC. Fence permits are required everywhere within the City of Mobile.
